In
June of 2001, Harley was posted on a website for an
animal shelter in Georgia that is a kill shelter,
As they have no true means of humane animal control
in the south, his picture was shown with an
expiration date next to it. The expiration date was
the unthinkable. A dedicated young woman that we
worked with at the time made arrangements to have
Harley and seven other puppies flown up from
Georgia on United Airlines. All seven other puppies
were placed. Many people half-heartedly claimed
they would give Harley a home only to back out at
the last minute.

Ronnie
Smith Kennels:
Has proudly produced fine bird
dogs for over 50 years. The Smith family believes in working
with a dog's natural instincts to assist each dog in
reaching his or her fullest potential.
Temperament:
The
breed is an energetic dog that requires exercise and
enjoys working, whether it is learning and practicing
tricks, competing in dog agility, or any other
physically and mentally involving activity.
Dogs
with strong working instinct may show more reserved,
guarding behaviors along with a tendency to chase or
nip at strangers. Its protective instinct and
behaviors can be frightening to children, strangers,
and small animals. They are kind, loving, and devoted
to those they know. They are very loyal to their
owners, and are rewarding dogs if treated well.
Because the breed was developed to serve on the ranch,
a job which includes being protective of its property,
it is inclined to bark warnings about neighborhood
activity, but it is not an obsessively barking
dog.
The
Aussie is intelligent, learns quickly, and loves to
play. This means that a bored, neglected, unexercised
Aussie will invent its own games, activities, and
jobs, which to a busy owner might appear to be
hyperactivity: for example, an Aussie may go from
being at rest to running at top speed for several
'laps' around the house before returning to rest.
Without something to amuse them, Aussies often become
destructive. Aussies also do best with plenty of human
companionship: they are often called "velcro" for
their strong desire to always be near their owners and
for their tendency to form intense, devoted bonds with
select people. Recent studies have also shown that
shepherds work well with special-needs kids and
babies.
The
Australian Shepherd has a reputation as a highly
intelligent and versatile stock dog with a range of
working styles. A good working Aussie is quick,
thoughtful, and easy with its stock. The ability for
the breed to adapt to the situation and think for
itself makes it an excellent all-around worker. For
this reason the Aussie is often chosen to work unusual
livestock such as ducks, geese, and commercially
raised rabbits.
The
Australian Shepherd, though a great dog for a family
with an abundance of time, can become extremely
destructive if left alone, or in small spaces. They
are known for digging holes, tearing up lawns, and
chewing anything in sight if they become restless.
These dogs require a minimum of 2-3 hours a day of
play and exercise and need constant attention. The
dogs thrive in rural, ranch like conditions, but would
be a nightmare for any busy group of people living in
a city or suburb. When restless, they will often try
to "herd" their owners which may include excessive
jumping, snapping, and biting. Read

Developed
in Germany, the Boxer is a breed of stocky,
medium-sized, short-haired dog. The coat is smooth and
fawn, brindled, white, or even reverse brindled with or
without white markings. Boxers are brachycephalic
(they have broad, short skulls), and have a square
muzzle, mandibular prognathism (an underbite), very
strong jaws and a powerful bite ideal for hanging on
to large prey. The Boxer was bred from the English
Bulldog and the now extinct Bullenbeisser and is part
of the Molosser, mastiff group.
Temperament:
The
character of the Boxer is of the greatest importance
and demands the most solicitous attention. He is
renowned from olden times for his great love and
faithfulness to his master and household. He is
harmless in the family, but distrustful of strangers,
bright and friendly of temperament at play, but brave
and determined when aroused. His intelligence and
willing tractability, his modesty and cleanliness make
him a highly desirable family dog and cheerful
companion. He is the soul of honesty and loyalty, and
is never false or treacherous even in his old
age.

Temperament:
Like many working dogs, Australian Cattle Dogs have
high energy levels and active minds. The breed ranks
10th
in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of
Dogs,
rated as one of the most intelligent dogs ranked by
obedience command trainability. Cattle Dogs need
plenty of exercise, companionship and a job to do, so
non-working dogs need to participate in dog sports,
learning tricks, or other activities that engage their
body and mind.
When
on home ground, Australian Cattle Dogs are happy,
affectionate, and playful pets. However, they are
reserved with strangers and naturally cautious in new
situations. Their attitude to strangers makes them
perfect guard dogs, when trained for this task, and
family pets can be socialized to become accustomed to
a variety of people from an early age. They are good
with older, considerate children, but are known to
herd people by nipping at their heels, particularly
younger children who run and squeal. By the time
puppies are weaned, they should have learned that the
company of people is pleasurable, and that responding
to cues from a person is rewarding, bringing a
friendly voice, a pat, an interesting activity, or
food. The bond that this breed can create with its
owner is very strong and will leave the dog feeling
very protective towards the owner; typically resulting
in the dog's never being too far from the owner's
side. Aggression in Australian Cattle Dogs is more
likely to be directed at strangers than owners or
dogs.
To
relieve the urge to nip, the dogs can be encouraged to
pick up and chew a toy or carry objects such as a ball
or a basket, and they can be taught bite control from
an early age. They are 'mouthy' dogs that will use
their mouths to attract attention, or to occupy
themselves. Any toy left with them needs to be
extremely robust if it is to last.
While
Australian Cattle Dogs generally work silently, they
will bark in alarm or to attract attention. They have
a distinctive intense, high-pitched bark which can be
particularly irritating. Barking can be a sign of
boredom or frustration; however research shows that
pet dogs increase their vocalization when raised in a
noisy environment.
Australian
Cattle Dogs respond well to familiar dogs, however the
establishing of a pecking order in a multi-dog
household can result in a few scuffles. If a Cattle
Dog is put in any situation where it feels threatened
or challenged, it can respond with aggressiveness
towards other dogs.
Bichon
Frise - West Highland White Terrier (Westie)
Hybrid
The
Wee-Chon is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between
the Bichon Frise and the Westie. The best way to
determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look
up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any
combination of any of the characteristics found in
either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs
being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is
very common for breeders to breed multi-generation
crosses.

My
family and I have two mixed breed dogs that are one
year old. They are great dogs with a lot of energy who
often ran after deer while on walks and jumped over
our four foot yard fence at home.
My
husband wanted to try electronic collars but I was
very reluctant. However, the excellent training with
e-collars with Dick Bernard has completely changed my
mind. Our dogs can now walk off leash in full control
and we rarely use the e-collars except for
environmental training purposes. The dog walks, which
became stressful, are now completely
enjoyable.
I
wholeheartedly recommend Dick Bernhard and the
e-collars. I do believe you need an experienced
trainer like Dick if you are considering an e-collar
for your dog or, the experience may turn out to be
completely different.
You
owe it to yourself and your dogs to hire a top rate
trainer like Mr. Bernhard.
Temperament:
Cairn
Terriers are adventurous, intelligent, strong, and
loyal. Like most terriers, they love to dig after real
or imagined prey. Cairn Terriers have a strong prey
instinct and will need comprehensive training.
However, they are intelligent and, although willful,
can be trained. Training of the Cairn Terrier has the
best results when training as a puppy, as they become
unwillfully stubborn. Although it is often said that
they are disobedient, this is not the case provided
correct training is applied.
Cairns
are working dogs and are still used as such in parts
of Scotland. Cairn Terriers generally adapt well to
children and are suitable family dogs.
Cairne
terriers are also found to be nervous and frightened
when brought to a new home but with correct training
he/she will finally break out of it. Read

Alicia
Hello Mr.
Bernhard,
Just a
little update on "life with Sage". We continue to
train her for more obedience competitions and now
are preparing for field events. Most recently we
had her evaluated for her CCA ( certification of
conformation assessment) no easy task for a gal
like Sage. To have to put up with extensive
evaluation by 3 judges. Not sages cup of tea! She
did an outstanding job by tolerating the entire
process. I thought you be entertained to know she
got a perfect 10 by one of the judges in
temperment. Sage and I have come a long way. I
thank you for giving me the insight and direction I
needed to trust myself and my life long companion
Sage. I will keep you posted on our
accomplishments.
Glad to hear
the good news about Sage. Its people like you
Alicia who can make all things possible. You have
the discipline to stick to your goals and follow
through with those issues which are important to
you without becoming sidetracked with other less
important issues.
Please do
keep me posted. Its nice to hear the progress from
one of my past students are making with all their
hopes and dreams being fulfilled. May they all come
true.
